Jeremy Burlingame Jeremy Burlingame The hero that never was In Faust, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe builds a dramatic poem around the strengths and weaknesses of a man who under a personalized definition of a hero fails miserably. A hero is someone that humanity models themselves and their actions after, someone who can be revered by the masses as an individual of great morality and strength, a man or woman that never sacrifices his beliefs under adversity. Therefore, through his immoral actions and his unwillingness to respect others rights and privileges, Faust is determined to be a man of un heroic proportions. It is seen early in the poem, that Faust has very strong beliefs and a tight moral code that is deeply rooted in his quest for knowledge. Sitting in his den, Faust describes his areas of instruction, "I have, alas, studied philosophy, jurisprudence and medicine, too, and, worst of all, theology with keen endeavor, through and through..." It is obvious that through his studies he has va lued deep and critical thinking, however with the help of Mephisto, he would disregard his values and pursue the pleasures of the flesh. Faust's impending downward spiral reveals the greed that both Mephisto and Faust share. Mephisto's greed is evident in the hope that he will overcome Faust's morality and thus be victorious in his wager with God; also because he is the devil and that is what he does. For Faust, greed emerges because of his desire to attain physical pleasures and therefore become whole in mind, body and spirit. Faust's goal to become the ?berminche is an understandable desire, however, the means at which he strives for those ends are irresponsible and unjust. It is through this greed that Faust with the help of Mephisto exploit others in the pursuit of Faust's earthly desires. Enter innocent Gretchen, a poor lower class young woman who experiences the impossible, love. Under Mephisto's magical potion, Faust becomes intoxicated with passion and controlled by his hor mones. It is under this spell that he approaches the "beautiful" Gretchen, however, the feeling of passion is not mutual between the two. Faust realizes then, that his simple looks and personality will not attract Gretchen, rather Faust must deceive and manipulate this woman in order to possess her. Thus, Faust turns to Mephisto for help in his quest for Gretchen, "Get me that girl, and don't ask why?"(257) Mephisto replies with a quote that establishes the nature at which Faust will pursue Gretchen with, "We'd waste our time storming and running; we have to have recourse to cunning."(261) It is from this point in the story that Faust declines into a state of immorality and irresponsibility; a level he will remain at for the majority of the story. Faust's immorality emerges from the idealization that despite harming others, there are not any consequences to his actions. The harm in combining Faust and Mephisto is that their actions become dangerous and deadly. Faust becomes an unstoppable, Napoleonic figure, when his irresponsibility is mixed with Mephisto's lethal power. Gretchen is Faust's first victim, before her death she was responsible for three deaths; ultimately she is imprisoned because of Faust's influence upon her. Faust's desire for progress and reformation in society led to the deaths of his second set of victims, an elderly couple. Thus, Mephisto burns them out, a result that Faust had not asked for specifically, but an action which served the purpose and was almost as detrimental as what Faust had intended for them, to move them out of their home. This action against the elderly is analogous to any other parts of the story in which Faust commits an illegal or immoral act to heighten himself in his own eyes. It is obvious then that Faust is a criminal, a man who abuses the rights of others to gain spiritual and financial freedom for himself. A criminal is a personn that should neither be rewarded or idealized for his actions against society . The only endeavor that Faust does in order to save himself, is to feel apologetic and remorseful for his immoral and self-serving actions, and is therefore allowed into heaven, an ending to the story which is unreal

INTRODUCTION: All famous and short stories are planned before written. The reader will most likely plan out his or her story. Drawing out a story plot chart is a great way to plan out a story. Short stories written without a plan is like a building a house without blueprints. Exposition, Rising action and Characterization have to be well thought of before writing a story. â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† by Kurt Vonnegut was most likely written without planning because it is a terrible story. The story’s exposition was nearly 3 sentences long. The rising action within the story was so poor that it was boring to read and the climax had no importance. Furthermore, the characterization in this story was so bad that connecting to any of the characters was nearly impossible. â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† by Kurt Vonnegut was a terribly written story due to the fact that the story lacked quality rising action, exposition and characterization. FIRST BODY PARAGRAPH 1. Because the story had was written without a well done exposition, it was very hard to understand what the author was talking about at times. 1. The author tells us near the beginning of the story that everyone is equal; that is clear but the author never tells the reader why society has come to the point where everyone is equal. 1. â€Å"All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th and 213th Amendments to the Constitution† (Vonnegut page 133) 2. At this point there was a clear given reason is to why everyone became equal. But there is no detail as to what these amendments are and why they were established. The background to why everyone has become equal is nearly equivalent as your parents answering a question with â€Å"because I said so†. There’s a reason behind the situation, but the reason has no detail at all. What are the 211, 212 and 213 amendments? ii. The book explains that Harrison Bergeron was taken away but it isn’t until the end of the story that the reader is told why. b. â€Å"And it was that month that the H-G men took George and Hazel Bergeron’s fourteen-year-old-son, Harrison, away.† (Vonnegut 134). 1. 2. Prior to this quote the reader is never told who the â€Å"H-G† men are or what they do. For all we know the â€Å"H-G† men could be good guys. The reader is also not told what Harrison did to be taken away until near the end of the story. This can e very confusing and misleading because the reader may believe that Harrison was taken away for a good cause. b. When stories are written with poor expositions it often leaves the reader guessing a lot as to what is happening in the story and that is not good. SECOND BODY PARAGRAPH 3. The story had terrible rising action and no suspense; this being, the climax had no importance. a. The rising action moved way too fast and too much happened in a short amount of time. i. Harrison was throwing the ballerina in the air with ease. Diana Glampers, The head of H-G walks into the room and shoots Harrison. The TV shuts off and neither of his parents care. (Page 138) ii. Although this quote is paraphrased, all this happened within two short paragraphs. Within two short paragraphs the climax is here and gone. Harrison went from dancing to being killed. There was no suspense to this scene and the climax was very bland. b. With terrible suspense, comes a terrible climax. i. Diana Glampers shoots their son on TV, the TV goes out and George (his father) complains about the TV going out. ii. The climax at this point is so bland that the reader isn’t affected in anyway. After reading this story it may be hard to even be able to tell when the climax occurred. Harrison’s son was killed on TV and the only thing that he was concerned about was how the power went out. At the beginning of the novel, the narrator lists his five prior breakups. This breakup portrays the narrator’s inability to sustain a relationship. He seems to be looking for something more that he cannot understand. The first breakup is with Alison Ashworth whom he dated for a few hours. Robs then dated Alison Hardwick, a year after his first breakup. Hardwick could not give into his sexual demands leading to a breakup. Rob, still eager for a relationship, steals his friend’s girlfriend who was called Jackie Allen. This relationship lasted only a few weeks after which Allen left him for his prior boyfriend, Phil. His fourth relationship ends in a breakup as well. The girl in the fourth relationship is Charlie Nicholson whom he met in college. Rob kept thinking that she was too good for him and that she would eventually leav e him for another person. They eventually break up. Rob still earns for relationship and meets Sarah Kendrew, who like Rob, hurts from a breakup. Rob and Kendrew swear to live together forever but Kendrew meets another person and leaves Rob. This string of breakup portrays Rob’s inability to commit fully in a relationship. Numerous breakups may motivate one to get into a mature sustainable relationship. However, Rob wants to be free so that he can act as he pleases. He also wants to enjoy an intimate relationship with a woman. This is irresponsible because he should take some time to assess his feeling and decide on the best course of action. Instead, he is contented by the initial infatuation and intimacy with a woman. After staying with a woman for a while, he starts questioning himself whether the woman is right for him. Rob usually finds reasons to leave her than stay in the relationship. This also happens with Laura, his next girlfriend (Knowles 14). The author uses the numerous girlfriends who broke up with Rob as a symbol to indicate his lack of commitment. His love for music symbolizes his loneliness and need for fulfillment. It is ironic that the author calls the novel high fidelity to highlight commitment to a marital relationship though Rob is committed to himself. Rob’s inability to commit does not apply to relationship but also other aspects in his life. For example, he dropped out of school due to the inability to commit to schooling requirements. He has a music shop that does not reward him significantly though the business does not bother him. He is comfortable with his meager earnings so long as he can afford a meal and shelter. His actions are attributable to lack of commitment to his responsibilities, as well as, woman named Laura. In the event that he was responsible, he would have worked harder to improve his life. Laura eventually prompts him to think of other things that he may enjoy doing in a bid to generate money. A read er is likely to label Rob’s actions are irresponsible. The Commitments by Roddy Doyle depicts the power of commitment. Derek Scully and Foster commit themselves to forming a band though they know little about music. Regardless of their inexperience, they continue pursuing their dream. They sign in more members and struggle to make their dream come true. On the contrary, Rob does not seem to put work hard at
